That Special Covering – Rugs

Friday, August 21st, 2009

When decorating we can spend weeks even months contemplating which pieces will look best in our homes, then there’s the accessories such as tables, lamps, pictures and carpets. Well, in most modern homes we have opted for the laminate flooring or that real wood floor finish, these look great but some times we need that something special to set it off.

Modern Lightweight Suites

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

A modern day suite is often the largest single item in your living space; it can often make or break your room. Many years ago these big and bulky furniture pieces were made from cast iron, wood and leather and took 3 or 4 grown men to move them, now we have lightweight plastics, microfiber, wood and silk. Modern furniture designers have taken the concept of sitting down and come up with there own interpretation of ‘being comfortable’, having trolled through the ‘net’ I have found some interesting concepts in seating.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Whether it be in the garden, home or office we all need somewhere to relax, modern chairs have the ability to look great, stylish as well as being comfortable. They come in many designs from the ergonomic recliners that massage your back and play music as you relax after that busy day at the office, to simply brilliant inviting bar stools with bright coloured fabric that just shout sit on me.

Choosing your seating is not a task to be taken likely, for example if its for your office you would want it to be a fully supportive ergonomic design as you will be in it most of the day, for the garden, you want to use materials that are weather resistant with bright vibrant colours so they cheer you up on the coldest of days.

In the house, there are just as many various designs and materials to tempt even the choosiest among you, whether it be a hanging seating area where the chairs are suspended on chrome chains from your ceiling to plastic on chrome bar stools, novelty chairs to incredible massage chairs – there is a modern seating arrangement out there for you.

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

City Centre’s could become ever more attractive to the modern social shopper. As many high street stores struggle to compete against the buying power of online shopping, this may be a solution that brings the best of two worlds together. The Solar Powered WiFi Bench is more than just a modern design concept bench as its name suggests.

Dancing Tables

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Mexican designer Joel Escalona has really divided opinion with his latest piece ‘Dancing Tables’. The limited edition designs have invoked plenty of discussion. The ‘Dancing Tables’ were inspired by Escalona’s roots and culture. You can see the physical resemblance of a dancing senorita’s dress. The Dancing Table is also accompanied by a Dancing Carpet and Dancing Plate. Love it or hate it, Joel’s work has certainly made furniture worth talking about again.

Furniture That Transforms

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Well we’ve had the toy, the big budget film, the cartoon series and now the furniture. Yep, Transformer Furniture, is going to be something a lot of us will be talking about in the future. The concept is that you can create the look and feel of the furniture to your own mood or creative experience. The end product of how the design looks will be completely reliant on how the person who has bought the furniture shapes it. I do have one slight negative vibe from it though, speaking as a parent who has kids, and having them in the same environment as a piece of furniture that slides and folds a lot, is not a good idea, I’ve been to A + E with a two year old who lost in a fight with a sliding drawer. It’s not pretty, believe me, still let’s not spoil our admiration of transforming contemporary furniture.

Eco-Friendly Furniture Or A Step Too Far

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I do love designers getting into the green theme of recycling material, especially where modern furniture is concerned. However, I’m not 100% sold, as-of-yet, to the product I’m about to highlight today. Carboard Furniture is not a new thing its been around for a few years, mostly the furniture pieces in the past were made from re-inforced cardboard held together by some very strong glue or the occasional screw – just in case.

It Scrubs Up Well

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Inspirational UK furniture designer, Jason Taylor, might be a name some of our Contemporary Furniture Blog readers might recognise. Jason was the man who was behind the ‘Scrub Together’ bench. It seems Jason has been busy creating other everyday items as modern furniture pieces. We thought it a great idea to highlight some of Jasons work here on our blog – we hope you enjoy them as well.
