Do you know that sitting in a poorly constructed seat will do irreversible damage to your back and spine? This is caused by the amount of pressure placed on the bones and muscles in your back, especially, if you have poor posture and slouch whilst working at your computer desk.
Some people might be at their work stations for more than 8 hours a day, and it’s only when they want to get out of their seat they realise that their body has become stiff, sore and, more-often-than-not, are unable to move freely.
It has been recommended that a person should move off their office or computer chair at least every half hour. It is also recommended that people should watch their posture, sitting correctly will decrease the risk of getting serious back problems.
Office chairs are built for a purpose and as the saying goes “you get what you pay for” – poorly designed work chairs will do more damage than good, however if you are going to purchase a new office chair, then there are several factors that you should be aware off :
1. Lumbar support, all good quality chairs should have a lumber support which should be able to be adjusted to each persons needs.
2. Height adjustment, ergonomics is very important to all employees, as all workstations are not at the same height it is very important that your seat is set to the correct height, thus saving your neck and head from constantly being put in the wrong position and will save you from many back problems later on in life. To have the proper posture you feet must be placed firmly on the ground again reiterating the importance of height adjustment.
Many people think that sitting on the wrong seat will only affect employees of large organisations, this is entirely wrong, if you sit on your computer at night (on a badly designed chair) this could have implications on your back and neck later on.
