Over the last year or so the whole world has been in the grip of a recession, as if you didn’t know, well for some it has meant that the annual holiday abroad has been cancelled while for others it was the ultimate loss of their family home.
With companies closing down every day and workers not knowing if they have enough work to last the rest of the week it’s good to see that for some, the good life still has to be maintained.
Take for example, Cherie Blair wife of the ex-Prime Minister Tony, who had to go out and spend some of their money to fill their new £5.75 million eighteenth century mansion in Wotton Underwood, near Chequers.
Priority items on Cherie’s list were some Georgian and Regency furniture. She had been reportedly seen visiting top auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s looking for that special piece or pieces to decorate their massive pad which has seven bed rooms and a massive drawing room.
Nothing wrong in choosing classical pieces, especially when you can afford it, but wouldn’t it have been special if Cherie had chosen modern furniture instead of contemporary classics.
Of course, Tony Blair, is a massive fan of British contemporary art. While Blair was in power he tried to reinvent Britain as a young, happening country. To-date Mrs Blair has spent more than £250,000 on antiques to fill the family home (if you believe the reports). If she ever gets the urge to go modern then we hope she drops by UK Contemporary Furniture first, I’m sure she’d enjoy the visit.
